Shelter/Friendship Center Supervisor
Those in need of emergency shelter should call or visit the Department of Social Services (DSS) Special Services Unit first during business hours. If they are eligible through DSS, DSS will refer people directly to the shelter.
The Homeless Services program assists those who are homeless or in peril of becoming homeless in Tompkins County. Homeless Services helps participants to find safe and secure housing and to obtain the financial means to sustain it.
Cold Weather Policy: If the temperature is below 20 degrees F, persons in need of shelter, even if they have children and/or are not eligible for DSS services, should call the Homeless Hotline.
The Friendship Center of the Homeless Services Program acts as a referral center and offers a drop-in site for individuals and families to come have coffee, food, use the telephones and take showers. Lunches are served every Tuesday and Thursday at 12 noon and the 3rd Saturday of the month from 3 to 5 pm. There is a Food Pantry that serves Tompkins County residents.Food giveaways are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4-7 pm, and Wednesday and Fridays, 2-4 pm.
